The Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday sentenced three men Kasumu Ademola, Salau Mikailu, and Ganiyu Ishola to 20 years imprisonment for defrauding a stock firm of N45.6m. Justice Chukwuejekwu Aneke handed down the jail term after he found them guilty of the offence. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had arraigned the convicts on four counts of conspiracy, unlawful fund conversion, and money laundering before the court to which they pleaded not guilty. The convicts, who were first arraigned in 2019, had pleaded not guilty to all eight counts and they were admitted to bail on various terms.…
A Federal High Court sitting in Akure, Ondo State, on Tuesday remanded four persons for impersonation and examination malpractices in the examination conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board. The defendants include Timilehin Akinwale, Olayinka Mustapha, Peter Okereke, and Feranmi Adesuyi. According to the prosecution, Moses Osimhen, the first three defendants; Akinwale, Mustapha and Okereke committed the offence of impersonation on February 15, 2023, during the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination at a Computer-Based Test centre located at Aina Awaw International College, Ilu Abo, Akure while Adesuyi committed the said offence on April 28 at Amable Nigeria Limited CBT Centre…
The Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has okayed the deployment of 39 more judges to the National Assembly, Governorship and State Houses of Assembly Election Petition Tribunals sitting across the federation. The addition of the judges, who were sworn-in at the Supreme Court on Thursday, increased the total number of members of various tribunals that are currently hearing petitions that arose from the conduct of the 2023 general elections, to 346. A Kaduna Magistrates’ Court on Thursday sentenced a 24-year-old woman, Linda David, to two years imprisonment for stealing underwear. The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, sentenced David after she pleaded guilty to the charge and begged for leniency. He however gave her an option of N40,000 fine and warned her to desist from life of crime. According to him, the judgement would serve as a deterrent to those who would want to indulge in such criminal act. The Court Of Appeal has slammed a N40 million fine on an ex-presidential candidate, lawyer Ambrose Owuru, for filing a suit to stop the inauguration of President-elect Bola Tinubu. The three-member panel of the court led by Jamil Tukur determined that by initiating a frivolous, vexatious, and annoying lawsuit to irritate the respondents, Owuru had engaged in a blatant abuse of the legal system. The Nasarawa State House of Assembly, has passed the state Superior Courts of Record Law Amendment Bill, increasing the number of High Courts Judges from 20 to 30, for speedy administration of justice. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday 23rd May, 2023 revoked the operating licences of 132 Microfinance Banks (MfBs), three finance companies, and four primary mortgage banks (PMBs). This was disclosed in the official gazette of the Federal Government, which was published on the website of the CBN. According to the gazette, the licences of the financial institutions were revoked because they ceased to carry on in Nigeria, the type of business for which their licences were issued for a continuous period of six months.
