A Sabo-Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court, in Lagos, yesterday, granted an application for an extension of remand of embattled afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, for additional four days. The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Adeola Olatubosun, extended Kuti’s remand until May 22. According to him, the extension is to allow for further investigation into the case. Mild drama played out on Tuesday at the ongoing trial of the suspended DCP Abba Kyari and others when journalists and lawyers were restricted from gaining access to the venue. The trial is before Justice Emeka Nwite of Court 10 of the Federal High Court in Abuja. A Yaba Magistrate Court on Tuesday gave the police 48 hours ultimatum to conclude its investigations into the case of embattled Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti after which the court will grant him bail. The Police had initially requested for a 21 day remand of the defendant pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions(DPP). The prosecution team of the police was led by S. An Ondo State Magistrate’s Court has jailed the traditional ruler of Ode community in the Akure North Local Government Area of the state, Oba Adewale Boboye, for unlawfully demolishing some property, palm trees and food crops. The destroyed property belonged to The Apostolic Church along Ado Ekiti Road, Igoba, Akure. He was arraigned on six counts bordering on felony, to wit malicious damage. A Federal High Court in Abuja has stopped the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) from further imposing fines on broadcast stations in Nigeria. The court on Wednesday gave an order of perpetual injunction restraining NBC from imposing fines, henceforth, on broadcast stations in the country. In his judgement, Justice James Omotosho voided the N500,000 fine imposed individually on 45 broadcast stations on March 1, 2019. The judge said NBC is not a court of law, and therefore, lacks the power to impose sanctions as punishment on broadcast stations. The general rule in evidence is that all relevant evidence is admissible. However, like most rules in law, this rule is not without its exception. Supreme Court has affirmed Governor Ademola Adeleke as the winner of Osun Governorship election held on July 16, 2022. The five-member panel of the Apex court agreed with the Judgement of the Court of Appeal, which reversed the January 27 judgement of the Election Petition Tribunal, Oshogbo, sacking Adeleke as Governor, ordering a withdrawal of the certificate of return issued to him. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winner of the poll, saying he scored 403,371 votes to sack Oyetola who was the then incumbent with 375,027. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has initiated extradition proceedings at the Federal High Court, Abuja against three suspects, Samson Ogoshi, his brother, Samuel and Ezekiel Ejemeh Robert, over alleged exploitation of minors and production of child pornography. The EFCC Spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, made this known on Monday in a statement in Abuja. According to Uwujaren, the Ogoshis and Ezekiel were indicted in a U.S.A Federal Court on Dec.1, 2022 on charges of exploitation of minors and production of child pornography resulting in death. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has raised an alarm over the importation and use of pesticides banned in Europe in Nigeria. NAFDAC, is, however, seeking stakeholders’ support to eliminate harmful pesticides from the Nigerian markets. Quoting a report of the study conducted by the Heinrich Boll Foundation, 40 per cent of pesticides used in Nigeria had been banned in the European Union. The agency also expressed its worries over the toxicity associated with the misuse and abuse of pesticides, saying it affects food safety and food security. THE Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, called for more investment in the Nigerian judicial system last week, noting that the current delay in accessing justice can be addressed through a multi-faceted approach. Speaking during its Prison and Hospital Ministry Conference, National Overseer of the church, Pastor Sunday Akande, disclosed that lack of fair hearing, consistent adjournment and inability to meet bail terms make many people waste their productive years in correctional facilities.
