The trend of bypassing, tampering with electricity meters and cables is not alien to Nigerians. Stakeholders in the electricity sector have continuously bemoaned persistent energy theft and meter bypass, which they say result in loss of revenue and could potentially cripple the power sector. Some unknown gunmen raided the Abuja office of one of Nigeria’s major news outlets, THISDAY, in the early hours of Thursday. The gunmen, who were confirmed to be about nine in number, arrived at the premises of the company in Jabi District at about 3 a.m. and assaulted some of the its production staff and private security guards on duty. The legal team to the family of late Timothy Adegoke has disclosed plans to visit the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali, or the Commissioner of Police in charge of the prosecution to press the demand for the transfer of the case back to Osun State. A 42-year-old father, Ekpo Lawrence, was on Thursday sentenced to life imprisonment without an option of fine by an Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court for defiling and impregnating his 15-year-old daughter. Giving the judgment, Justice Abiola Soladoye said the prosecution diligently proved the ingredients of the charge of defilement that was proffered against Lawrence by the Lagos government. The judge said the evidence cited by the prosecution had been consistent, while that of the defendant had been inconsistent and manifestly unreliable. The Nasarawa State Police Command on Thursday said it was on the trail of the killers of 54-year-old Grace Dauda. Dauda, who was the Chief Nursing Officer of Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, Abuja, was murdered by unknown persons at her residence in Auta Balefi, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, on January 7. The Federal government has concluded plans to commence the inspection of organisations for additional slots of Expatriate Quota facilities, Renewal of Expatriate Quota Positions, as well as inspection of Places of Worship for the issuance of Licences to conduct Statutory Marriages and renewal of existing marriages. The federal government has approved new guidelines for the administration of expatriate quota in Nigeria, according to a public notice on Thursday by the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola. There have been complaints about the abuse of expatriate quota by some companies and organisations in Nigeria. The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) said it achieved over a 100 percent of its collection target for the year 2021, despite the global economic challenges occasioned by the Coronavirus pandemic. “Notwithstanding the limitations faced in 2020/2021, the Service achieved over a hundred percent of its collection target,” Executive Chairman, Muhammad Nami stated in the FIRS 2021 Performance Update, issued yesterday.
