The coroner’s inquest into the death of Sylvester Oromoni has suffered a setback. The sitting had been adjourned until April 11 and 12 for some witnesses to testify. The new National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) bill if signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari, will boost the agency’s performance and address its longstanding funding problems, NHRC’s executive secretary, Tony Ojukwu, has said. “The signing of the bill will help to shore up Nigeria’s human rights records, given that the commission would do more to deliver on its statutory mandate,” a statement issued on Monday by the commission quoted Mr Ojukwu as saying. Telecom firm, MTN, has received final approval from Nigerian regulators to run a payment service bank, the wireless carrier said in a regulatory filing on Monday. “The date of commencement will be communicated to the CBN (Central Bank of Nigeria) in accordance with its requirements,” the telco heavyweight said of the bank to be known as MoMo Payment Service Bank Limited in a note to the Nigerian Exchange. The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Friday, validated last year’s arrest and repatriation of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, from Kenya by the Nigerian government. The judge, Binta Nyako, dismissed Mr Kanu’s claim that the federal government illegally repatriated him from Kenya to Nigeria without following a formal extradition procedure. The Ghanaian government has banned spending and transaction of businesses in foreign currencies in the country. The Central Bank of Ghana, which disclosed this in a statement Thursday, warned citizens and companies to stop transacting business, pricing goods and services and advertising in foreign currencies.
