The prosecutors said the Ekweremadus were being charged for bringing a 15-year-old boy from Nigeria to the UK with the claim that he was to be given a better life in the UK
Uxbridge Magistrates Court in London has dismissed former Nigerian Senate Vice President Ike Ekweremadu and his wife Beatrice Ekweremadu on bail after London Metropolitan Police charged them with conspiracy to harvest organs from children.
The couple were arrested by police on Thursday and charged with conspiring to harvest the organs of a child they had brought to London.
According to Arise TV, prosecutors say Ekweremadus is accused of bringing a 15-year-old boy from Nigeria to the UK with the claim that he should have had a better life in the UK but in fact should have his organs removed.
Prosecutors told the court that Mr Ekweremadu provided the boy’s passport and declared him 21 years old, but prosecutors discovered he was only 15 years old.
According to prosecutors, the duo has a daughter with kidney disease who has been on dialysis for some time. They added that they believe the plan is to use an organ from the boy for their daughter, who appears to need a kidney transplant.
Arise News reported that Mr Ekweremadu and his wife had separate legal representation and asked the court to release them on bail, but their request was denied by the judge.
The couple submitted their passports to the British government. The judge ordered their detention until July 7, 2022, for the next hearing on the case.
