The National Assembly has assured Nigerians that the ongoing amendment of the Electoral Act 2022 will be completed on or before December 2025, well in time for the 2027 general elections.
Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, representing Ekiti Central, gave the assurance on Tuesday after Senate President Godswill Akpabio read President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s letter seeking confirmation of Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Bamidele explained that the aim is to avoid delays that affected past electoral reforms, noting that the previous administration under late President Muhammadu Buhari could not sign the final aspects of the 2022 Electoral Act due to the timing being too close to the 2023 elections.
“This time, we will conclude the amendment process on or before December 2025, so the law will be ready for use in the 2027 elections,” Bamidele said. “The National Assembly has learned from past experiences and is taking proactive steps to ensure transparency and credibility in the electoral process.”
Bamidele, who also serves as Vice Chairman of the Constitution Review Committee, expressed optimism about the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution, highlighting enhanced collaboration among the National Assembly, the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, and the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures.
“All relevant institutions are working together, and I do not foresee resistance from the Presidency. Our focus is on achieving a people-driven constitution aligned with global best practices,” he said.
Addressing criticisms from opposition parties, Bamidele said the ruling party remains focused on governance, economic recovery, and institutional reforms.
“No matter the level of performance, the opposition will often seek to discredit the government. But we remain committed to rebuilding Nigeria and strengthening democracy,” he said.
As the 10th Senate enters its third legislative year, Bamidele noted that lawmakers will prioritize major reforms, including the Electoral Act amendment, constitutional review, and other legislative initiatives aimed at deepening democratic institutions and ensuring credible elections in 2027.
“This Senate has a full agenda. We are committed to leaving behind a legacy of strengthened institutions and lasting democratic growth,” he said.
Prof. Joash Amupitan was nominated by President Tinubu following his unanimous approval by the Council of State last Wednesday, a development Bamidele said underscores the readiness of Nigeria’s institutions to support credible electoral processes.
