The Lagos State High Court will commence its annual vacation on July 21, 2025, marking the official end of the 2024/2025 legal year. This was disclosed in a notice dated June 5, signed by the Chief Registrar of the court, Mr. Tajudeen Elias.
According to the announcement, the vacation will run until September 12, 2025, with court activities resuming for the 2025/2026 legal year on September 15. A special service to mark the new legal year is scheduled for September 22.
The vacation was approved by the State Chief Judge, Justice Kazeem Alogba, in line with Order 49, Rule 4(D) of the Lagos State High Court Civil Procedure Rules, 2019.
However, Elias clarified that the Criminal Division of the High Court will remain active during the vacation period. He emphasized that where a judge in the criminal division proceeds on vacation, a designated vacation judge will be assigned to handle all pending criminal matters.
“Despite the long vacation, any urgent case or matter may still be heard, provided all parties consent,” Elias noted. He added that such urgent hearings can be requested by summons in chambers before either the vacation judge or the judge handling the substantive case.
