The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has secured the conviction of Emmanuel Ogunyemi, a civil servant in Lagos state, for unlawfully receiving salaries from two government agencies.
Investigations by the ICPC revealed that Ogunyemi was simultaneously on the payroll of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the Agbado Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), resulting in an illegal gain of N3.49 million.
According to the commission, Ogunyemi violated section 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000.
Following its findings, the ICPC filed an eight-count charge against Ogunyemi before the Lagos state high court in Ikeja (Charge No: ID/25541C/2024).
However, the defendant opted for a plea bargain, under which the charges were reduced from eight to three.
He pleaded guilty to the charges before Ismail Ijelu of the Ikeja high court, who convicted him.
In line with the plea bargain deal, the court imposed non-custodial sanctions on Ogunyemi.
The court ordered him to pay N1.5 million fine and complete three days of community service under the supervision of the Lagos state ministry of justice.
The court also ordered Ogunyemi to sign a N5 million bond of good behaviour, which would be forfeited if he commits any offence in future.
Before his arraignment, Ogunyemi had voluntarily refunded the entire N3.49 million to the ICPC recovery account. The court also ordered the forfeiture of the sum to the federal government.
Additionally, he submitted a written undertaking to the ICPC, pledging to abide by the law.
The prosecution team was led by Yvonne William-Mbata, with support from Roseline Eze and Oluwayemisi Pereira. The defendant was represented by Kehinde Adeleke.
The conviction, the ICPC said, reflects its ongoing efforts to enforce accountability and uphold integrity within the public sector.
