The United Kingdom Supreme Court has ruled that polluted Nigerian communities can sue oil giant Shell in English Courts. According to BBC Africa, this decision overturns a previous Appeal Court ruling and represents a victory after a five-year legal battle. The Niger Delta communities say decades of pollution have severely impacted their lives, health, and the local environment. Shell in its defence argued that it was only a holding company for a firm that should be judged under Nigerian law. During an event on Tuesday, President of the United Republic of Tanzania John Magufuli appealed to the country’s judiciary to make court judgments more accessible to the people of Tanzania by publishing them in Kiswahili (also known as Swahili) rather than English. Magufuli argued that writing court judgments in English rather than Kiswahili “deprive citizens of their rights” and creates additional charges, such as paying for an interpretation. The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed another suit filed by the Sani Abacha family seeking access to the looted funds which they and the late Nigerian dictator stashed in foreign bank accounts.
