One of the Candidates for the office of the First Vice President, Nigerian Bar Association, Dr. Promise Iwezor has urged lawyers in Nigeria not to vote for candidates for the office of First Vice President, Nigerian Bar Association who are hungry, stating that Lawyers should vote for him as he is not hungry.
Dr. Promise made this comment while campaigning for support and votes at the 2nd Quarterly Meeting of the Eastern Bar Forum which held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on Saturday, 21st June, 2024.
Our correspondent noted that the remark did not go down well with lawyers at the meeting who booed and jeered at him for making such a remark against his fellow candidates and in a gathering of fellow colleagues.
A member of the Forum, in a conversation with TheNigerialawyer correspondent, said, “Other candidates who also addressed the meeting held their composure in the face of such unhealthy, inappropriate, uncouth and disparaging comment coming from Dr. Promise Iwezor.”
“For a lawyer to refer to his colleagues and learned friends as hungry because of an election of a two-year tenure without any benefits but just to serve the Bar is unprofessional, uncalled for, and extremely unfortunate,” the member added.
“It is a comment which the Electoral Committee of the NBA needs to investigate and come up with appropriate sanctions,” he concluded.
Speaking with Dr. Promise, while clarifying the issue, he said, “Lawyers should not vote for candidates that are hungry and will go to the national office to look for money instead of service to the Bar.”
The other candidates, which included Sabastine Anya, former Chairman of NBA Aguata Branch, Barth Ageogbo, former Chairman of NBA Ikeja Branch, and Williams Soseipiriye Esq, former Governor of the Eastern Bar Forum, addressed the meeting by outlining their programs and what they intend to achieve if voted as the First Vice President of NBA.
The NBA General Elections, which is conducted through Universal Suffrage, will be held on 20th July, 2024.
