The Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC), under the leadership of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon Justice Ariwoola, has shortlisted 44 candidates for elevation to the Court of Appeal.
The decision was made during a meeting held on April 2, 2024, and was documented in a memorandum marked FJSC/01/2024.
The FJSC initially received a pool of 89 names for consideration, which was carefully evaluated and narrowed down to 44 candidates. In a strategic move, the commission further categorized the shortlisted candidates into two lists: a priority list consisting of 22 names and a reserve list with an additional 22 names. The reserve list serves as a contingency plan in case any candidate from the priority list is unable to proceed with the appointment process.
It is crucial to note that at this stage, no appointments have been made, and no individuals have been officially recommended for the positions. The shortlisting process is a vital step in identifying the most qualified and deserving candidates for elevation to the Court of Appeal.
TheNigerialawyer has exclusively learned that the interview process for the shortlisted candidates is scheduled to commence on Wednesday. The interview committee will be chaired by Hon. Justice Kekere-Ekun, J. SC, who holds the position of second-in-command at the NJC. Upon completion of the interviews, the committee will compile a comprehensive report and present it to the National Judicial Council (NJC) during a plenary session.
The NJC will then meticulously review the interview committee’s report and make a final recommendation of 22 names to the President of Nigeria for appointment to the Court of Appeal.
The elevation of judges to the Court of Appeal is a rigorous and thorough process that ensures the selection of the most competent, experienced, and integrity-driven individuals to serve in this pivotal arm of the judiciary. The FJSC and NJC are steadfast in their commitment to upholding the highest standards of merit and credibility in the appointment of judges to the Court of Appeal.
