A former Minister of Finance, Olusegun Aganga, has explained that the naira would continue to experience a free fall if Nigeria remains an import-dependent country. He said it was not a wise decision to defend the naira with billions without appropriate investments in the manufacturing sector to drive the country’s exports. Daredevil armed robbers on Friday stormed three banks in the Otukpo area of Benue State and carted away money several millions of naira. The suspected robbers were said to have driven into the town around 3:15 p.m. and used dynamites to force the door open. Seven people, including policemen and a former councillor transacting business in one of the affected banks, were reportedly killed by the suspected robbers who operated for more than an hour. Acting chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Zacch Adedeji, has allayed fears being expressed by corporate organisations that the resolve of FIRS to increase the country’s tax-to-GDP ratio to 18 per cent from 10.86 will lead to increase in taxes. Amnesty International said a total of fifteen protesters arrested during the #EndSARS protest of 2020 are still being arbitrarily detained three years later. The international organisation on Friday said in a statement on its website that the majority of the protesters are in Kirikiri Medium Correctional Centre and Ikoyi Medium Security Correctional Centre in Lagos without trial. President Bola Tinubu has appointed Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu as chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, who announced this in a statement, on Tuesday, also said Mr. Clifford Okwudiri Oparaodu was appointed as the new Secretary of the commission. The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has begun the stakeholder consultation process for its phase 4 Regulations development. The stakeholder consultation process, which is a requirement of the Petroleum Industry Act per S.216(1) in the development of new regulations, had begun earlier in July with the Commission calling for inputs to relevant draft regulations from concerned stakeholders. The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, Wednesday, declared that governors do not have the constitutional powers to ban mining activities. Alake made the statement during a pre-event press conference in Abuja ahead of the 8th edition of the annual Nigerian Mining Week 2023 slated for October 16-18,2023 in Abuja. This was revealed by a child rights advocate known as pepstalk1 on her Instagram page on Wednesday.
