The House of Representatives on Wednesday, February 21, asked the Council of Legal Education to put in abeyance, the recent 60 percent increase in the school fees of the Nigeria Law School. A Lagos State High Court in Ikeja on Tuesday sentenced a man, Akinosun Omotayo, who stole and attempted to rape his victim on New Year’s Day, to 10 years’ imprisonment. Justice Modupe Nico-Clay sentenced Omotayo following a plea bargain agreement he entered to lessen his punishment. The judge held that the prison term shall begin from the day the convict was remanded in 2019. Omotayo was first arraigned on three counts bordering on stealing, attempted rape, and assault preferred against him by the Lagos State Government. President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of DCG Kemi Nanna Nandap to serve as the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), effective from March 1, 2024. According to a statement by Presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, on Wednesday, DCG Nandap takes over from Mrs. Caroline Wura-Ola Adepoju, whose term in office expires on February 29, 2024. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague continued its public hearings on the legal consequences arising from Israel’s policies and practices in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem. The top UN court had begun hearings into the legality of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, on Monday. However, the hearings are unrelated to the current war in Gaza and follow a 2022 request by the UN Security Council. Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has said resources have been set aside to recover and reconstruct all the heritage sites destroyed by the Boko Haram insurgents. Recall that centuries-old historic sites of Kanuri origin in Kukawa, Fort of Rabbi and Gazargamu were annexed and later destroyed by Boko Haram terrorists. The federal government has announced its plan to block leakages of official documents, following a series of recent leaks exposing wasteful and other forms of suspicious expenditures incurred by public officers amid the worsening economic woes of the country. Folashade Yemi-Esan, Nigeria’s head of civil service of the Federation, expressed concerns about rampant cases of disclosure of sensitive official documents in ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs). The Attorney General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), on Tuesday, called on the Economic Community of West African States Court of Justice to refrain from issuing orders and judgments that are impossible to enforce. But human rights lawyer and a former President of the West African Bar Association, Femi Falana, (SAN), asked the AGF to speak only for himself, arguing that only Nigeria was culpable of shunning ECOWAS Court orders. The Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Ikeja has sentenced a 55-year-old man, Emmanuel Adedigba, to 14 Years Imprisonment for the attempted sexual assault of his neighbour’s 14-year-old daughter Justice Rahman Oshodi handed down the sentence after the convict was re-arraigned on an amended charge. The convict was earlier arraigned on the charge of defilement which he pleaded not guilty to. During the trial, the prosecution counsel, I.D. Solarin presented two witnesses.
