Ruling on a lawsuit filed by Unung’s wife and mother of his three children, Justice Ntong Ntong ordered the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police to arrest and detain him for one month at the Uyo Correctional Centre for refusing to take care of his children. Ntong also noted that the respondent deliberately refused to obey the Court order and decision of Justice Iboro Ukpanah of November 9, 2018, mandating…
An Ikeja Magistrate’s Court has ordered the remand of a 50-year-old security guard, Mohammed Sanni in the Nigerian Correctional Service facility for allegedly defiling a 13-year-old girl. The Presiding Chief Magistrate, O.A Layinka, who did not take Sanni’s plea, ordered that the case file be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice. Layinka adjourned the case until March 28, pending the DPP’s advice. The prosecutor, Insp Lucky Ihieme, had told the court that Sanni committed the offense on January 8 at Obidiegwu Street, Iyana School, Iba, Lagos. He said Sanni invited the victim to eat “suya” (meat…
The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, have issued a 14-day nationwide strike notice to the Federal Government. Their grouse is the non-implementation of the 16-point agreement between organised labour (NLC and TUC) and the Federal Government on October 2, 2023. Leaders of the NLC and TUC are sad that, despite organised labour’s efforts to ensure industrial peace, the government seems unperturbed by the mass suffering and hardship across the country. The October 2 agreement was “focused on addressing the massive suffering and the general harsh socioeconomic consequences of the ill-conceived and ill-executed IMF/World…

President Tinubu in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale…
In 2018, when the Reverend Matthew Firth took up his new post at St Cuthbert’s, the church which has been at the heart of the north-eastern market town of Darlington since the 12th century, he was eager to bring new souls to the faith he passionately believes in. It didn’t take long, however, for Matthew to figure out that there was something suspicious about the large number of souls from the Middle East who were queuing up to be converted to Christianity. “When I arrived, lots of adult baptisms were already booked in, which was highly unusual. The vast majority,…

Hon. Justice Polycarp Hamman of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Portharcourt Judicial Division has dismissed the preliminary objection filed by Seateam Offshore Ltd in a matter brought by Akuroma Stephen for lacking merit. The Court voided section 2(3)(c)(d)&(r) of the Admiralty Jurisdiction Act 2004 for being inconsistent with the constitutional provisions vesting the court with exclusive jurisdiction over labour and employment-related cases. Justice Polycarp held that with the coming into effect of the 3rd Alteration which is now section 254C of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, the argument of the Seateam Offshore Ltd challenging the jurisdiction of the Court…
History has given us not only the court system, but a bizarre and far from self-evident system of naming judges. Some judges are pompous enough to take umbrage if you get it wrong: certainly, it does not give a judge confidence that you know what you are doing if you get it wrong or depart from convention. You may well think that a judge who takes umbrage over this sort of thing is a silly old …. You will be right – but your job is to represent your client so there is no point in annoying the old codger.…
