THE Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has faulted the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) recent directive that banks should obtain and verify customers’ social media handles. The Commission described the directive as illegal, noting that it violated privacy laws. The apex bank had on June 26, directed banks to obtain the social media handles of customers as part of enhanced Customer Due Diligence (CDD) regulations. The court has upheld the powers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), to impound vehicles, and imposed a fine on the defaulting motorist. Michael Benson esq., a lawyer in Akwa Ibom State was arrested by officers and men of the FRSC on patrol in 2017 for violating driver’s license, vehicle licence and tyre rules. The Federal Government has urged the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division to reverse the April 18 judgment of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja ordering among others, the reinstatement of Ifeanyi Ararume as the Chairman of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL). The Federal Government also faulted the N5 billion damages awarded in Ararume’s favour in the judgment given by the trial court, arguing that he (Ararume) did not establish his entitlement to such a huge compensation. A Federal High Court in Yenagoa on Friday dismissed a preliminary objection filed by a defence counsel challenging the prosecution powers of the Department of State Security (DSS) to prosecute cybercrimes. The DSS had on Oct. 18, 2021, arraigned a teenager before the court on one count charge of cyber-stalking. The defendant, according to the prosecution, allegedly engaged in cyber-stalking by circulating the nude picture of a retired Permanent Secretary on social media after she tried to blackmail the retiree, into paying her N15 million. A High Court sitting in Ondo state, has sentenced a 78 year-old community leader, Ojo Komolafe, to death by hanging over the shooting and killing of a school proprietor, Taofik Babalola. Komolafe was said to have committed the offence on August 7, 2021 at Kajola area of Odigbo local government area, and reportedly killed the victim with a gun. Co-founder of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Bill Gates, has called on the federal and state government to improve their budget for healthcare, lamenting that only $10 is spent on each Nigerian annually. A 43-year-old pastor with Mountain of Fire and Miracles (Worldwide), Chinedu Eze, has revealed how he was detained in prison for 14 years following his alleged refusal to cooperate with police on an issue he claimed he had no knowledge about. He, however, said that while in prison, he enrolled for the Senior School Certificate Examination and bagged a Bachelor’s degree in Peace and Conflict Resolution from the National Open University of Nigeria out of the 996 inmates through the efforts of Christ Embassy Church. The United Kingdom (UK) Monday simplified trading rules and cut tariffs on products from developing countries, including Nigeria, saving businesses and consumers millions of pounds a year. The UK’s new post-Brexit Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS) scheme, which entered into force yesterday, according to a statement by the British Deputy High Commission in Nigeria, covers 65 countries, including Nigeria. It said with the new scheme, over 99% of goods exported from Nigeria would automatically be eligible for duty-free access to the UK.
