The attention of the Nigerian Bar Association (“NBA”) has been drawn to a directive credited to the Registrar-General of the Corporate Affairs Commission (“CAC”) to the effect that accredited agents of the CAC, including lawyers, are to revalidate their status as agents with the CAC and pay the sum of Ten Thousand Naira (₦10,000), failing which the defaulting agents may be unable to access the CAC’s Portal. The Corporate Affairs Commission has canceled the unlimited accreditation granted to Lawyers, Chartered Accountants and Chartered Secretaries to transact business with the Commission on behalf their clients. The commission has replaced the unlimited accreditation with yearly renewable accreditation at the cost of Ten Thousand Naira for individuals and Fifty Thousand Naira for firms. A Guideline from the Commission stated that all agents accredited with the commission have until the 31st day of March 2021 to renew their accreditation in line with the new directive of the commission. According to BBC Africa, this decision overturns a previous Appeal Court ruling and represents a victory after a five-year legal battle. During an event on Tuesday, President of the United Republic of Tanzania John Magufuli appealed to the country’s judiciary to make court judgments more accessible to the people of Tanzania by publishing them in Kiswahili (also known as Swahili) rather than English. The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed another suit filed by the Sani Abacha family seeking access to the looted funds which they and the late Nigerian dictator stashed in foreign bank accounts.
