The Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele’s alleged involvement in politics on Sunday attracted more strong condemnations, with senior lawyers and other eminent Nigerians calling for his immediate resignation. Senior lawyers and top politicians, who spoke separately to The PUNCH, stated that Emefiele’s continuous stay as the CBN governor was dangerous to the economy. They said this as the Chairman of Ward 6 in the Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, Mr Nduka Erikpume, in a telephone chat with one of our correspondents on Sunday, said the CBN governor had registered as an APC member. When…
The government of the United Kingdom has confirmed a monkeypox infection in an unidentified individual who travelled from Nigeria to England. The infection, which was reported by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), is believed to have been contracted in Nigeria before the patient arrived in the UK. Without disclosing the identity of the patient, the UKHSA, in a publication on the official UK government website, noted Saturday that the patient is receiving care at an infectious disease unit. It added that experts in collaboration with colleagues at the National Health Service (NHS) in England are working together to contact…
Taxes are critical to government spending on social services such as security, education, power, health and other development initiatives that improve the welfare of citizens. In Nigeria, the major source of government income is crude oil whose price has consistently remained unstable and unreliable. Therefore, the unpredictability of the market makes it imperative for the nation to have an improved tax system to lessen reliance on crude oil revenues and increase funding for government to meet its obligations to the people. The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has been contributing significantly in the funding of the Nigerian budget over the past years. In 2021,…
The Federal High Court in Lagos, on Thursday, sentenced a former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Productivity, Clement Illoh, to four years’ imprisonment over N65 million SURE-P project fraud. The judge, Babs Kuewunmi, passed the judgement after Mr Illoh abruptly changed his previous “not guilty” plea to “guilty” in the middle of proceedings on Thursday. According to a statement by the spokesperson for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Wilson Uwujaren, the prosecuting team cross-examined the defendant during Thursday’s proceedings. In the course of proceedings, the statement said, the defence counsel, T.S. Awana, sought the court’s…
TotalEnergies has joined the list of international oil corporations wanting to exit Nigeria’s troubled onshore oil fields, a decision that will further impact Nigeria’s dwindling oil revenue. On Thursday, Bloomberg reported that the French energy giant announced it will put up for sale its minority stake in a Nigerian oil joint venture. What this means is that TotalEnergies will no longer be part of the exploration and production of crude oil in the onshore Niger Delta. Just like Shell, ExxonMobil, Total Energies also wants to focus on deep-water fields away from the difficulties of operating in close proximity to local…

The appellants in the suit at the apex court are Musa Chola and 1,319 others and the respondents include the APC, Governor Mai Mala Buni, Senator John Akpanudoedehe, Olayide Adewale Akinremi, Senator Abba Ali, Dr Tony Macfoy,…
Hello, subscribers — if the number you are calling is not switched off, you will soon pay a higher tariff. This is because President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the collection of five per cent as excise duty on telephone recharge cards and vouchers, TheCable understands. The charge is part of new items on the list of goods liable for excise duty on the Finance Act in the country. Excise duty is a levy charged at the time of manufacturing. It is also a form of indirect tax on the sale or consumption of certain goods, products, services or activities such…
U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts on Tuesday said the Supreme Court will investigate the leak of a draft decision indicating that a majority of the nine justices are set to overturn the constitutional right to abortion, a breach of the court’s trust that he called a “betrayal.” In a news release, the court confirmed that the document is authentic but cautioned that the draft opinion, dated from February – which would overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide – does not represent the “final position of any member on the issues in the case.” Roberts…

The UN Secretary-General is expected to meet with the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo in Abuja. During his visit to Abuja, Guterres will officiate a wreath-laying ceremony for victims of the 2011 bombing at the UN House. This is his…
