The African Bar Association (AFBA) has been granted Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), marking a landmark milestone for the international organization and its role on the global stage.
In a formal communication dated July 30, 2026, signed by Birgitte Bryld, Acting Chief of the NGO Branch, Office of Intergovernmental Support and Coordination for Sustainable Development, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the United Nations confirmed that ECOSOC adopted the recommendation of its Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) on 21 July 2026, formally granting the status to the Association.
What Is Special Consultative Status?
Special Consultative Status is a formal recognition accorded by the United Nations to non-governmental organizations that have demonstrated a sustained and meaningful contribution to issues within ECOSOC’s mandate. The status enables qualifying organizations to engage directly with ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies, the Human Rights Council, and, under specific conditions, certain meetings of the General Assembly and other intergovernmental bodies, as well as with the United Nations Secretariat.
The consultative relationship is governed by ECOSOC Resolution 1996/31, adopted on 25 July 1996, which sets out the framework for NGO participation in the UN system.
Key Privileges and Benefits Conferred on AFBA
With the granting of this status, the African Bar Association is now entitled to a broad range of privileges within the United Nations system:
Attendance at UN Meetings and Access to UN Premises
AFBA may now designate official representatives to UN Headquarters in New York and the UN Offices in Geneva and Vienna. These representatives are authorized to register for and participate in sessions, events, conferences, and activities of the United Nations. They may also sit as observers at public meetings of ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies, the Human Rights Council, and, under certain conditions, the General Assembly and other intergovernmental bodies.
Submission of Written Statements
AFBA may now submit written statements relevant to ECOSOC’s work on subjects within the Association’s area of special competence — namely law, justice, and governance across the African continent. Such statements may be circulated by the UN Secretary-General to Council members.
Oral Presentations
Upon recommendation by the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations, AFBA may be invited to make oral presentations to the Council.
Consultations with ECOSOC and Its Subsidiary Bodies
AFBA may now directly consult with ECOSOC commissions and subsidiary bodies, as well as with officers of the UN Secretariat on matters of mutual interest. Additionally, the Secretary-General may request AFBA to carry out studies or prepare papers relevant to ECOSOC’s work — an acknowledgment of the Association’s recognized expertise.
Use of United Nations Facilities
The Secretary-General is authorized to offer AFBA access to a range of UN facilities, including:

. Access to UN press documentation services and librariesSeating arrangements during public
. General Assembly meetings on economic, social, and related matters
. Prompt distribution of documents from ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies
