The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has explained how Nigerians can submit petitions on alleged fraud and other financial crimes through its online portal, warning that filing a false petition is a criminal offence.
According to the commission on its website, petitioners must provide accurate information when submitting complaints online.
The EFCC warned that making a false petition is punishable under Section 64(3) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000, with a penalty of up to 10 years’ imprisonment or a fine not exceeding ₦100,000.
To submit a petition, applicants are required to complete an online form with their personal information.
The required details include first name, middle name (optional), surname, National Identification Number (NIN), submission type, gender, phone number, email address, country, state, local government area and residential address.
Petitioners must also provide information about the case, including the subject or title of the petition, the suspect’s name and location, the complainant’s name, where the alleged crime occurred, the amount involved and the currency.
They are also expected to give a detailed account of the complaint in the petition section.
The EFCC said petitioners may upload supporting documents, although this is optional.
Accepted files include PDF documents and image files, while each uploaded file must not be more than 10MB.
The commission also requires users to complete a security verification before submitting a petition.
Before filing a petition, applicants must confirm that they have read and understood the notice on false petitions and agree to provide truthful and accurate information.
The EFCC said providing complete and accurate information would help it process petitions more effectively.
