The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), through its Remuneration Committee chaired by Chief Emeka JP Obegolu, SAN, has issued official implementation and enforcement guidelines pursuant to Order 11(4) of the Legal Practitioners Remuneration (For Business, Legal Services, and Representation) Order, 2023.
The guidelines empower each NBA branch across the federation to develop context-specific enforcement models tailored to their local realities, provided such models are adopted at a duly convened general meeting and submitted to the national Remuneration Committee for record and confirmation.
According to the release, the NBA Remuneration Committee is fully responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Remuneration Order 2023, and it will work in collaboration with corresponding committees at the branch level.
Among the key directives issued are:
- Each NBA Branch is authorized to draft its own implementation and enforcement model.
These models must be debated and voted upon by branch members at a properly constituted general meeting. - Once adopted and submitted to the Remuneration Committee, such models become binding on the members of that branch.
- The Remuneration Committee has ratified previously passed resolutions by branches that align with the objectives of the Order.
Call to Action for Branches:
Branches that have already adopted resolutions are required to send extracts of such resolutions, along with the minutes of the meetings, to the Remuneration Committee.
Branches that have yet to deliberate on implementation must convene meetings promptly to determine and adopt their preferred models.
All adopted resolutions should be properly documented and forwarded to the Committee for records.

The NBA reiterated its firm commitment to promoting the dignity of legal practitioners through fair and reasonable remuneration across all legal sectors.
“We reaffirm our commitment to protecting the dignity of legal practitioners and ensuring that lawyers are fairly and reasonably compensated in line with the NBA Remuneration Order,” the statement reads.
