For the first time, a Big Four firm has been approved to practice law in the U.S.
KPMG just secured Arizona Supreme Court approval to launch KPMG Law US, an independently managed law firm that will offer legal and consulting services.
Arizona, which scrapped traditional restrictions on non-lawyer ownership in 2020, has now become the testing ground for what could be a major shift in legal service delivery. Most states still prohibit non-lawyers from owning law firms, but supporters argue that changing these rules could reduce costs, increase competition, and improve access to justice.
One major limitation: KPMG Law US won’t be allowed to serve clients that KPMG audits, a restriction meant to safeguard independence.
KPMG may be the first, but they definitely won’t be the last. This move shows how professional services are evolving—and it’s only a matter of time before others follow suit.
