The Nigerian tax system is taking a major step forward with the launch of the Nigerian Tax ID Portal, scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2026. This initiative, introduced by the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) in collaboration with the Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS), is aimed at simplifying tax administration and improving compliance across Nigeria.

For individuals, business owners, and corporate entities, understanding this new Tax ID system is essential for staying compliant with Nigerian tax laws.

What Is the Nigerian Tax ID?

The Nigerian Tax Identification (Tax ID) is a unique 13-digit number generated by the tax system and assigned to every taxable person or entity in Nigeria.

  • Individuals: The Tax ID is linked to your National Identification Number (NIN).

  • Companies and organizations: The Tax ID is linked to your Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number.

From January 1, 2026, this new Tax ID will replace all previously issued Tax Identification Numbers (TINs).

Why the New Tax ID Matters

The introduction of the Tax ID is designed to:

  • Create a single, unified tax identification system

  • Reduce duplication and errors in tax records

  • Make tax services more accessible nationwide

  • Improve transparency and efficiency in tax administration

For businesses, this means smoother interactions with tax authorities and a clearer compliance framework.

How to Retrieve Your Tax ID Online

The Nigerian Tax ID can be retrieved easily through the official portals:

For Individuals

  1. Select the “Individual” option on the homepage.

  2. Choose National Identification Number (NIN).

  3. Enter your 11-digit NIN.

  4. Click “Retrieve Tax ID.”

  5. Enter your first name, last name, and date of birth exactly as captured by NIMC.

  6. Click “Continue.”

  7. Your 13-digit Tax ID will be displayed.

For Businesses and Corporate Entities

  1. Select the “Corporate” option.

  2. Choose the appropriate organization type.

  3. Enter your CAC registration number.

  4. Click “Retrieve Tax ID.”

  5. Your 13-digit Tax ID will be displayed.

Important Compliance Information

  • Effective Date: Mandatory use begins January 1, 2026.

  • Purpose: The Tax ID is used strictly for tax administration.

  • Security Assurance: The Tax ID will not trigger bank account deductions or closures for non-compliance.

These assurances are intended to address public concerns and build confidence in the new system.

What This Means for Businesses and Individuals

For companies, startups, NGOs, and professionals, the new Tax ID system emphasizes the importance of:

  • Maintaining accurate CAC and NIN records

  • Ensuring tax filings are up to date

  • Aligning corporate compliance with Nigeria’s evolving tax framework

Early familiarization with the Tax ID Portal will help avoid last-minute compliance issues when the system becomes fully operational.

When Does the Tax ID Portal Become Active?

The Nigerian Tax ID Portal is officially live and accessible nationwide from January 1, 2026. Taxpayers who require guidance are advised to visit the portal or consult their tax advisers or nearest tax office.

Conclusion

The launch of the Nigerian Tax ID Portal marks a significant development in Nigeria’s tax and regulatory landscape. By linking tax identification to existing national databases, the system promotes efficiency, accountability, and ease of compliance for both individuals and corporate entities.

Businesses and individuals are encouraged to retrieve their Tax ID early and seek professional advice where necessary to ensure full compliance with Nigerian tax laws.
